The Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) is recognized as one of the world's
leading developers of cleaner, more efficient energy and environmental technologies
to protect and clean our air, water, and soil.
The EERC is a high-tech, nonprofit branch of the University of North Dakota (UND).
The EERC operates like a business; conducts research, development, demonstration,
and commercialization activities; and is dedicated to moving promising technologies
out of the laboratory and into the commercial marketplace.
Specialized Expertise
The EERC is focused on solving the energy and environmental challenges that the
world faces today and tomorrow. The solution to each challenge brings with it the
need for specialized capabilities, facilities, and expertise. One of the EERC’s
strengths is its ability to approach a problem from a multidisciplinary angle, employing
multiple areas of focus to solve a problem.
The EERC's Areas of Focus:
- Advanced Power and Energy Systems
- Energy Conversion System Optimization
- Environmental Chemistry and Waste Management
- Emission Control Technologies
- Fossil Energy Resources (oil, gas, and coal)
- Hydrogen Production and Distribution and Fuel Cell Technology
- Renewable Energy
- Water Management (availability, contaminant remediation, and flood and drought protection)
Research and Development
In partnership with private industries, government agencies, and academic institutions, the EERC conducts basic applied
research and development of practical, problem-solving technologies and processes using the best combination of leadership,
talent, equipment, and laboratory space available.
Technology Demonstration
The EERC has significant expertise designing and demonstrating technologies. The EERC has more than 54,000 square feet of
state-of-art demonstration facilities, occupying more than three city blocks, which house numerous bench- and pilot-scale
combustion, gasification, and emission control systems. The EERC also conducts numerous demonstration tests in the field.
Technology Commercialization
The EERC's unique business model focuses on moving technologies out of the laboratory and into the commercial marketplace.
Each potential and new client, every contract, and every project are considered commercialization opportunities. The ultimate
goal is to work in partnership with clients to develop, refine, demonstrate, and commercialize marketable products that
provide practical solutions to real-world challenges.
