Currently, close to a billion tons of coal is burned annually to generate electricity in the United States, and as a result, over 100 million tons of coal ash is produced. Only one-fourth of this amount is used, while the rest are disposed of mainly in landfills. Increasing cost and heightened regulations are making the disposal of coal ash an undesirable option.
